The Atlantic was dark, the waves high. Lieutenant Commander James Barnes of the US Navy peered through his periscope, searching for the German U-boat that had been harassing Allied convoys. Instead, he found a submarine unlike any he had ever seen-sleek, silent, and glowing with a faint blue light.

"What is it?" his executive officer whispered.

James shook his head. "I don't know. But it's not German."

The submarine surfaced, its hatch opening. A figure emerged, dressed in a uniform of silver and black.

"I am Captain Elara Vance of the United Nations Temporal Corps," she said, her voice amplified across the water. "I have come to prevent a catastrophe."

James ordered his crew to stand down, climbed onto the deck of his own submarine.

"What kind of catastrophe?" he asked.

Elara pointed to the horizon. "In three days, a German U-boat will sink a passenger liner. Among the dead will be a scientist whose work is vital to the Allied war effort. Without him, the war will last another two years."

James's blood ran cold. "You want us to stop the U-boat?"

"I want you to help me stop it. My submarine is faster, quieter, and better armed than anything in this time. But I need your knowledge of these waters to find the target."

James looked at his crew, at the enemy, at the future.

"We'll help you," he said. "But when this is over, you go back to your future. And we never speak of this again."

Elara nodded. "Agreed."

They worked together, two submarines from different times, hunting the German U-boat. The battle was fierce, the enemy skilled, but the future submarine was unstoppable.

The U-boat sank, its crew rescued, its mission failed.

Elara's submarine surfaced, her crew waving.

"Thank you," she said. "The future owes you a debt."

Her submarine faded, vanishing into the light.

James stood on the deck of his own boat, the waves calm, the sky clear.

"What do we tell the admiral?" his executive officer asked.

James looked at the horizon, at the future that would now be different.

"The truth," he said. "That we won a battle today. A battle for tomorrow."

They sailed on, the war still raging, but the future safe.

And James Barnes never forgot the ghost submarine that had appeared from the mist and saved them all.
